Despite stiff competition, we have recently won innovation funding from SEEDA for a research project with the University of Brighton, for the comparison of pXRF (portable x-ray fluorescence) versus conventional intrusive testing methods. This project demonstrates Geo-Environmental’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation and technology, in order to deliver the best services at the best value for our customers. It also demonstrates our commitment to support local educational establishments in developing research projects that improve working methods and produce highly skilled engineers to drive our industry forward. PXRF is used for identifying heavy metals, such as lead or cadmium. If you have a site that you feel would be suitable for the project please contact me on mike@gesl.net » or 07748 964085. There would be no charge for the PXRF testing but we would have to charge for any boreholes to provide the comparison.
We recently attended the EcoBuild conference at London's ExCel Conference centre. The conference had three streams; beyond construction: achieving a sustainable future, making sustainable construction happen and design, architecture and sustainability. Our main focus for the conference was to talk with the exhibitors, of which there was around 1,300, and find out their view of the market, in terms of both buoyancy and direction.

Staying up to date with new standards: We recently spoke at the IEMA (Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment) South East Regional event "Delivering Brownfield Redevelopment in a Down Turn" at Brighton University on the 1st February 2011 and have also been delivering a series of focussed presentations on the new Eurocode 7 standards. Both presentations are available to download.
The focus of our talk for IEMA "How new standards for geotechnical and environmental site investigation and design could enable more sustainable developments". The presentation was aimed at those who wanted to gain an overview of the new standards for Eurocode 7 and BS10175, which cover geotechnical site investigation and design and the investigation of potentially contaminated sites respectively, as well as discussing new methods of site investigation which could reduce risk in new developments – reducing costs down-stream in the development process and protecting profits and margins.

We have also been visiting a number of companies in the South East to discuss in more detail the new Eurocode 7 standards. The Eurocode 7 standards, which specify higher levels of intrusive investigations than previous regulations, also fundamentally change the way ground investigations are interpreted and reported, demanding greater synergy between geotechnical and structural engineers. The presentation that we have written provides a brief overview of Eurocodes before going on to discuss in more detail Part I and II of Eurocode 7, finishing with a discussion on some of the benefits and implications of the new standard.
