The Project

Geo-Environmental undertook the ground investigations for the MOD’s Project SLAM, on behalf of Debut Services in Andover, Sandhurst, Brize Norton, High Wycombe and Hounslow. SLAM is a tri-service project which aims to upgrade progressively the worst Single Living Accommodation (SLA) to Grade 1 physical condition. Debut Services Ltd, a consortium acting as Prime Contractor, were responsible for the design, construction and initial 7 year maintenance of the new facilities.

The works were required to assess potential environmental issues and to support the design of foundations for new buildings and additions to existing buildings. All staff had to undergo a security check to work on-site and comply with a strict health and safety regime.

Expertise

Geo-Environmental was able to provide relevant professional and technical support to understand and overcome the challenges with this site and achieve the required goals to support the development. When challenges are identified in site developments, experienced geotechnical engineers can ensure that delays and additional costs do not occur. Our geotechnical team has extensive experience and this is a crucial factor in ensuring that our clients meet their goals. Our experience was particularly required in areas where information about the location of existing utilities services was incomplete and further scanning was required to locate them.

Benefits

Of primary importance was the requirement for strict protocols in respect of Health and Safety for the workforce and in particular, the MOD staff on-site, as the works were undertaken on live sites. The client confirmed that they were very impressed with all aspects of Health and Safety protocols undertaken by Geo-Environmental, and in particular, our comprehensive site specific Method Statements and working Risk Assessments.

As Geo-Environmental have an OHSAS 18001 accredited health and safety system and have also achieved CHAS and Construction Line status for our health and safety procedures, the health and safety requirements for working on a secure site did not provide us with any difficulty.
