PI (PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY) INSURANCE – GI SECTOR CAPACITY
It is worth looking at this story in the AGS Magazine regarding PI (Professional Indemnity) Insurance. It seems that there is no immediate end in site to the hard insurance market that we are in so we are going to have to start getting used to the [...]
LATEST CONSIDERATE CONSTRUCTORS SCHEME AUDIT
A new year and the first audit of the year. We had a site audit by video conference with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). This was a new experience but seemed to work pretty well. GETTING THE BUILDING BLOCKS RIGHT
An interesting report from the Green Alliance, 'Getting The Building Blocks Right - Infrastructure priorities for a green recovery' was published this month. OPENGROUND CLOUD
"I noted that Bentley have formally launched OpenGround Cloud. We have been early adopters of this software as we believe that one of the best ways of reducing risks on projects is to share data across all organisations. OpenGround facilitates this by making it easy to share geotechnical data with other members of the project team, reducing miscommunication, double-entry of data and ultimately project delays. Some clients perhaps don’t know that [...]
DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG
Interesting story from Kent Online recently: KENT ONLINE DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG Southern Gas Networks are quite rightly encouraging companies to dial before you dig. However, there can be many utilities underlying a site and it would be much better if you could get this information in one place. This is exactly what Line Search Before You Dig have tried to do, but not all of the utilities/telecoms companies have signed [...]

I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS GOING TO BE THAT STONY
The beauty of doing Agricultural Land Assessments is that you don’t know what you are going to find when you go on site. When we superficially looked at this site we thought that it was Grade 2 agricultural land. However, one of the key limiting factors when we do an Agricultural Land Assessment is stoniness – this site was certainly stony. The stones were so big I was struggling to [...]
AUDITS BY VIDEO CALL – ITS A BRAVE NEW WORLD
In a sign of what could be a new normal we did all of our ISO audits by video conference. Certainly dispensing with the site visit was much less time consuming for the auditor and ultimately DAS were able to ask for a lot more information than they normally would have done. Video auditing is not a soft option! However, such is the technology that we now have at our [...]

STARTING MY SHIFT IN THE OFFICE
Just starting my shift in the office this morning. We are well and truly open for business, site work continues as normal, and there will always be someone in the head office to deal with post, deliveries and document signatures. Everybody else will be working from home working on reports. I suspect that the silver lining to this cloud is that being in the office will be much more productive than [...]
BUDGET 2020 POSITIVE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR
"I very much welcome the UK budget 2020 announcement this week. There hasn’t been a lot to smile about in the construction sector for a while, but I applaud the emphasis infrastructure investment in the budget. There are a lot of commentators out there who are saying that the Government hasn’t spent enough and they would have spent more, however, they seem to be in denial of the fact [...]

FLOODEX UK 2020
It was a really quiet Floodex this year. Nobody was entirely sure why. One thought was that companies may be busy dealing with the current floods. Another was that potential Corona Virus was keeping people away. It has been a good start to 2020 for business, so potentially companies are too busy. Nevertheless, there were some interesting companies and organisations exhibiting and some good presentations, so there was still plenty [...]
ACHILLES CONNECT: INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS EVENT (updated)
Achilles Connect: Infrastructure Projects (updated - post event 05.03.20) The Achilles Connect: Infrastructure Projects event, held recently in Birmingham, was really worth attending. Firstly, there was really good advice on how to look for opportunities with HS2 and what they are looking for. Secondly, the presentation on carbon management, with an explanation of ISO14064, was the best I’ve seen – lots of food for thought. Finally, I applaud the ECA [...]

Toby (pictured) is doing a great job for us in Shoreham testing samples for metals contamination using XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence). XRF is highly sensitive to metallic elements, however, the XRF from QROS can also detect the lighter elements such as Ca, Mg, Al, Sulphur and Chlorine, which can be useful for Sulphate estimations. The use of more in-situ and on-site testing is one of a number of measures that we [...]

Happy New Year to you all. A New Year and a New Decade. A new Government as well and regardless of your political affiliation, I’m sure you will welcome never having to mention the “B” word ever again! 2019 was not without its challenges. The uncertainties in the economy made sales activity very volatile, especially in the first 6 months of the year, but that is behind us now and [...]
GEO-ENVIRONMENTAL: 2019 CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

"On behalf of Geo-Environmental I wish you all a Merry Christmas and see you in the New Year. As it’s 2020 we should all be able to see more clearly than we had in 2019!" Mike Brown, Geo-Environmental Commercial Director.
GENERAL ELECTION RESULT – THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
"The Conservatives have got the majority that they wanted. It is important for the construction industry that they use this to not only get Brexit done, but also to create a far more stable economic climate and that they reach out to businesses. The last three years have not been easy. There has been a lot of uncertainty and in the construction industry insolvencies have increased. Profit margins [...]
ACE SUSTAINABILITY GROUP MEETING
Tuesday was a very early start. From helping the Rotary Club with putting up the Christmas tree in Arundel town square we dashed to London for the ACE Sustainability Group meeting. Very interesting discussion about why using the 5 capitals models for sustainability (as discussed in the Future of Consulting Paper https://www.acenet.co.uk/media/4458/foc-a5-overview-2019.pdf) in project procurement would be a fantastic driver for changing the culture within the construction industry to meet [...]

"If you’re not already engaged with the ACE about the Future of Consulting, I would urge you to do so. There were a lot of really interesting discussions on how the consultancy industry in the construction sector can redefine itself to better meet the needs of the future. ACE FUTURE OF CONSULTANCY PT 1: EXPORT POTENTIAL
"There were some very interesting insights at the ACE Future of Consultancy Conference and I would like to share some slides with you on export potential. At a time when we do appear to be heading for a relatively flat economic period, this is a timely reminder that there is still an awful lot of opportunity for winning new business, if you are willing to broaden your horizons. I [...]
GOVERNMENT SET TO SCRAP RAIL FRANCHISING MODEL
Interesting article in Infrastructure Intelligence this week regarding the end of the UK's rail franchising system. Mike Brown, commercial director of Geo-Environmental Services Ltd and chair of the ACE’s rail sector interest group, was asked to comment: It has become clear that rail franchising does not help collaboration across the network and this has prevented the railway from working as the strategically run system that we need it to be. [...]

UK GOV – SPENDING REVIEW DELAY
Very interesting times we live in at the moment. Over the last few months I have attended a lot of meetings with the ACE, Pension Companies, Insurance Companies and other construction companies. Almost everyone I have spoken to has complained about how volatile the trading environment has become, with the blame being laid at the volatility of UK politics at the moment. However, there is another symptom of this that [...]

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS FOR THE GEO-ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM
The latest course in our planned training programme for our staff was mental health awareness training with the charity MIND. Unfortunately, the frequency of mental health issues is increasing within the construction industry. In fact, one study found that one in five construction workers struggle with mental health issues. As a result of this, the Company has placed great importance on improving everyone’s awareness of mental health. When you think [...]

This 'Future Of Consultancy Workshop' explored opportunities around offsite manufacturing. The invitation-only event brought together consultants and contractors to discuss issues around offsite manufacturing, and how we can collectively seize the opportunities offered in this space. At GESL we have [...]
DEPLETED HOUSING DEPARTMENTS
An article in THE PLANNER recently highlighted a trend we have noticed for a long time now ... "Cities across the UK have borne the brunt of real-terms local government funding cuts in the past 10 years, and planning suffered some of the deepest cuts". Over 10 years after the 2007 stock market crash, planning departments around the Country are depleted in terms of resource. Whilst the last two administrations have [...]
ENERGY AND UTILITIES (EU) – SMARTER POWER GRID FORUM

GEO ENVIRONMENTAL CONGRATULATES LEVENT DOGAN
Congratulations to our own Levent Dogan for achieving Chartered Engineer with the Chartered Institute for Highways and Transportation! If anybody says that achieving CEng is easy I can testify that they are wrong. Levent’s supporting information was a mighty tome that put the Encyclopaedia Britannica to shame! As an organisation Geo-Environmental is pleased to support its staff’s professional progression, it is a “win-win” for our staff, the Company and our [...]

HIGHWAYS UK 2018 @ NEC
Many thanks to my colleague Levent for attending Highways UK 2018 up at the NEC. Based on his discussions with attendees at the conference, there were concerns raised about what the scrapping of PFI meant for highways construction and the final outcome of any BREXIT negotiations. With luck we should have some positive clarification on both at some time in the future, but until then it is going to make for an uncertain time [...]

WILL WE NEED ENGINEERS?
In Construction News recently, discussing the need for changing roles in the industry, Alex Gilbert, MD at Amey Consulting, made a worthy contribution in the 'Expert Opinion' section: As an industry, we have critical missing data around what industry jobs will look like in future, who will we be employing and what skills we want people to have. Given the growth of automation and artificial intelligence, will we really need engineers [...]

3D SITE MAPS USING AUTOCAD 3D
We are in the process of trialling a new Leica GPS on some of our sites. Previously we were reliant on the client having to provide us with site levels, but we can now work independently of that. We can then create a 3D map of the site using AutoCAD 3D and onto this we can export the borehole logs from Holebase SI. This will allow us to show [...]

The area that they are looking at is vast, stretching from Herefordshire on [...]
MENTAL HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION
In 2018 the Construction Industry has focussed hard on improving how it handles mental health issues in the workplace – for example, MATES IN MIND "Mates in Mind aims to raise awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and improve positive mental wellbeing in the UK construction industry. Mates in Mind has an ambitious goal – to reach 100,000 workers in its first [...]
SHOULD THE WEST MIDLANDS BECOME A NATIONAL PARK?
Regarding the importance of good infrastructure planning ... this is a great quote: The worst aspect of what Manzoni did to the heart of England, Moore thinks, is that his roads carved up poorer neighbourhoods and made them more deprived as a result. “If you look at the map of multiple deprivation in the West Midlands,” she explains, “you’ll see how deprived communities are often ringed by roads that [...]
DUDLEY ADVANCE II – LEADING THE WAY

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS EFFECTIVENESS
Mike Foster, EUA Chief Executive, makes an excellent point that ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) cannot be truly effective if insulation levels are insufficient. "For new build, with high insulation standards, heat pumps may deliver. For the 88 per cent of existing homes off grid, let’s consider sensible alternatives. Now if BEIS don’t agree with these numbers, call their bluff, time to show us your hand." See: EUA WEEKLY NEWS [...]
ANY PRESSURE TO INNOVATE?
During last months Architex 2018 there was a very interesting and honest talk by Chris Blythe, Chief Executive of the CIOB. Chris asserted that there was not a mindset to innovate in construction – productivity has barely changed in 25 years and skill levels are at an all time low. Furthermore he stated that innovation is not happening generally and where it is, it is tiny. Coming from a the [...]
SOUTH WEST OF NAILSEA & THE NPPF
It is noted that the land to the South West of Nailsea has not been classified under the Post 1988 Agricultural Land Classification, but as much of the area either side has been classified as Grade 2 or Grade 3a, there would be a reasonable argument to say that the proposed development area is likely to be considered to meet the NPPF definition of the “best and most versatile agricultural [...]
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Some very thought provoking ideas from David Taylor, the President of CABE during the recent Architex 2018. Some of the areas that he discussed such as offsite and modular technology and use of drones, we are already involved in. However, the use of virtual reality and augmented reality; such as the DAQRI Smart Helmet, sounds as if it has a real potential to be revolutionary in the workplace. It [...]
LEAVING NO MARK
BRE365 soakage tests with no JCB. On a sensitive site with manicured lawns, all that could be seen to show that we were there were two lines in the grass. Otherwise the site was immaculate when we left.

Rock Fall Risk Assessment
We are often asked whether we are able to undertake risk assessments for slopes, especially for road and rail projects, at risk of rock falls. We can undertake a rock fall risk assessment and the tool we use to model these is called RocFall. RocFall is a statistical analysis program designed to assist with assessment of slopes at risk for rockfalls. Energy, velocity and "bounce height" envelopes for the entire [...]
Brownfield First
In our business, we regularly come across derelict land, often in a prime location, with potential for development and not currently in use. Reusing brownfield land must be an essential part of the delivery of new developments across the UK, according to a new report from the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC). The report, Brownfield First: making better use of our land, draws on long-term expertise to identify ways in which development on brownfield [...]

Building Damage Assessments
It has become much more common for basement extensions to ask for a building damage assessment. In many councils planning guidance and within planning conditions you may find text such as: "...we will need to be satisfied that effective measures will be taken during demolition and construction works to ensure that damage is not caused to the listed building and any buildings it directly adjoins." In order to satisfy this [...]

Where does ground engineering fit in the BIM process?
There are many models showing the BIM process, but to date we haven’t seen one which states clearly how the supporting cast of organisations, which include; piling contractors, ecologists, geophysicists (who undertake scans for utilities, sub-surface objects etc), as well as ground engineering consultants, fit into the process. Because we are providing data to support the design and validate that any potential remedial measures have been correctly implemented, we sit [...]

New ways of presenting data: 3D modelling
As BIM has become more and more widespread, I have seen a lot of diagrams that look a lot this: But where are the ground conditions in this picture? I would argue that long before you produce the above, it would be very useful, particularly for brownfield developments, to get a view on the depths of made ground on the site at various investigation points, identify solution features or identify [...]

Large scale Solar PV installations still have a place
We seem to be constantly hit by a number of conflicting statements in the course of two weeks on energy generation. On the 20th October the Environment Secretary Liz Truss declared that the appearance of English farmland was 'blighted by solar farms'. This week the National Grid warns of lower winter power capacity. So despite the fact that we need to increase energy generation of all forms, is large scale Solar PV [...]
